Chapter 27

Mia

I’d yet to have a single panic attack over the idea of dating Lex. That could be because, like he’d said, our friendship was already a lot like dating.

What was really going to change?

My week was going well, and Michael seemed to be getting along with his assigned team. So far, I’d had no complaints about him. It always amazed me how my brother could behave like a professional at work yet turn into a whiny toddler as soon as we left the building.

It was three in the afternoon, and I was seated behind my desk when Spencer came in to ruin my good day. He looked as though he’d run to my office.

“We have a problem,” he began as he closed the door behind him and sat in one of the chairs by my desk. “A big problem.”

“I assumed we had a big problem when you raced in here like your hair was on fire.” I leaned back in my desk chair. “What’s going on? Please, tell me it’s nothing Michael did.”

He shook his head. “It’s not Michael. Technically, we don’t have a problem. You do.”

“Business or personal?” I asked.

“Personal,” he replied before handing me his phone. “My assistant came across this article about you on her break.”

“Me?” I asked. “Why would anyone write an article about me? I’m not all that interesting.”

I cursed when I saw the photos with the article.

Deluded Serenity had a growing fan base in the Bay Area, and one of their fans had been at The Tap Room. They’d gotten some good pictures of me with Lex.

I started reading the article aloud.

“Deluded Serenity’s bad boy bassist, Lexus Whitier, has a new submissive. According to witnesses, he stole her away from her current billionaire Dom, Jeremy Rainer of Rainer Industries. Who is this mousy little submissive?”

“Mousy little submissive?” I asked Spencer. “Do I look like a mousy little submissive?”

Spencer shrugged. “Not to me.”

I shook my head and continued reading. “They know who I am and where I work. This is bad.”

“It’s a low-circulation gossip magazine,” Spencer pointed out. “I wouldn’t panic over it if I were you.”

“You panicked first.” I pointed at the article. “These stories spread, and it could end up all over the internet, especially if someone posted these pictures on social media. It sounds like social media is the main source of their information. They don’t even have quotes from any of us.

“Mia,” he began in a soothing tone. “Calm down. The pictures don’t look that bad. The most they have is one where it looks like Lex is whispering in your ear from behind and one where it looks like he’s about to kiss you.”

I nodded. “You’re right. I need to stay calm and call Jeremy, Lex, and my father.”

“I was thinking I should take care of Jeremy,” Spencer replied. “After what already happened with him, it would be best if you don’t talk to him.”

“All right,” I agreed. “I can’t believe I did something this stupid. Dating a client?
